What’s happening on the Net? January 13

This has been an amazing week.  For writers and publishers, the landscape is changing daily, even hourly.

Amazon released the first month’s statistics on the Kindle Select Program.  Amazing results were enjoyed by all the authors in the program.  Amber Scott and Carolyn McCray both had books in the top ten revenues in the lending program.  According to Amazon “Carolyn McCray, a writer of paranormal romance novels, historical thrillers and mysteries, earned $8,250 from the KDP Select fund in December. “Amber Scott, a romance writer earned $7,650 from the KDP Select fund in December.” More information about their success and future plans can be found here

Kick Like No One’s Watching”.  This post is full of valuable information on kicking our worst critic to the curb: ourselves.  Her post is timely, as we start to establish the habits to meet our goals for 2012 and addresses all those concerns most artists have about the value of their work and their lives.

The Book Designer, Joel Friedlander,  talks about the importance of support groups for independently published writers.  He provides a list of five groups and others are included in the comments.  Well worth the read if you’re going to go on the journey of independent publishing.

Liz at the Write Practice, did a great job of explaining How to Use Either, Neither, Or, and Nor Correctly. She posts a weekly grammar column that is always worth a look.  See this column here.

Last but not least is a blog from my friend, Ginger Calem: Writer’s Butt Wednesday.  Ginger has started a group for those writers who have ‘get fit’ or ‘get in shape’ as part of their plans for this year.  She has developed a simple, easy to implement (note I didn’t say easy to do) plan to help each of us get in better shape without killing ourselves through hours of exercise.  Although I wasn’t successful last week, I have the best of plans for this week.  Ginger’s second post in this series can be found here.

This short sampling of information, excitement and suggestions doesn’t scratch the surface of the blogs I’ve read this week.  Blogs abound.  I hope you enjoy these and find them as valuable as I did.

  1. Thanks for the fantastic resources, Louise! Ginger’s plan sounds awesome. I love the go-getter-ness spilling about the blogging/writing world. I believe that’s always been the case for the majority of successful writers, but with the current state of publishing you mentioned, it’s like the Wild West in terms of opportunity. Great news for all of us… 🙂

  2. Very interesting collection of posts you have here. My list of things to read keeps growing exponentially! Thanks for sharing, Louise. (as the the pushups . . . um, not doing so good here, either.)

    • Lynette what is it with me and exercise? sheesh. I know I need to do it but I don’t. but then I know I need so many words a day and I have b een failing miserably at that for the weekend as well. hmmm need to revisit my time management I think.

A huge thank you for pointing me to “How to Use Either, Neither, Or, and Nor Correctly.” ! I never get it right. I’ll check out the other posts later. Great mashup, Louise!

  4. Hi, Louise,
Whoa! Thanks for including my post in your mash-up. I’m honored! Holy Moley! The numbers coming out of the Kindle Select program surprised me so much, I had to put on my glasses to make sure I was reading them right. Thanks for the links to The Book Designer and The Write Practice. Alas, I’ve fallen behind on push-ups. I’d better head over to Ginger’s blog and confess.

    • pushups? Me too – I’ve totally failed on push ups. I keep reading hoping for energy. I’m so lost with her program…loved your post.Pat. I do the same thing – and I need to remember to kick that demon to the ground.
